These materials are still in the development stage. The motivation for this curriculum came from Sunday School teachers in the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA). At a workshop to draft a Sunday School program for younger children, one mother and Sunday school teacher commented, "We need a series like this for our teens, age 13-17. That is the time when we are losing our children." In February 2007, Joint Project hosted a brainstorming workshop for Africans who currently minister to youth in Nigeria. This was a time for learning, discussion, and prayer for the teen ministry. Participants brainstormed engaging topics and formats to fit the Sunday School context. After the workshop, staff members took the ideas and developed a four-year outline for a new teen curriculum. In September 2007, Joint Project brought together a number of Nigerian volunteers to write the lessons in a writers’ workshop setting. By November 2008, the first year of teen lessons will be translated into Hausa, printed, and available for use in churches starting in January 2009. Book 1: The Journey (for use in 2009) will focus on life as a journey. Lessons will give students a foundation for faith, and tools and encouragement for living in a godly manner. There will be key lessons addressing teen issues such as peer pressure, adolescence and sexuality, speaking wisely, being a good friend, and time management. |
